Maryland man accused of shooting 2 after altercation

An Upper Falls Point, Maryland, man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting two men in the head in early November. The man, age 26, is accused of perpetrating the violent crime after one of the two victims had a conversation with the alleged shooter's girlfriend. Officers apprehended the man after he reportedly fled the scene.

This is not the first time that the man has been in trouble with the law; in fact, he was charged with handgun violations in March 2012, and he still has drug distribution charges pending. It is not clear whether the man's attorney in that case will continue to represent him through the murder investigation. His drug trial, which is unrelated to the most recent deaths, is slated to begin in January.

Official reports show that the two victims were both shot in the head during the early evening hours on Nov. 7. The trio had reportedly been involved in an argument several blocks away, but the alleged shooter is accused of following the two men after the initial fight. One of the victims had spoken to the shooter's girlfriend, a move that the gunman reportedly thought was inappropriate.

Those two deaths added to a rash of killings in the city during the first week of November, which raised the total number of homicides in the Baltimore area to 200. Three other victims, including two in their early 20s, were also killed between Nov. 5 and Nov. 7.

Even though the defendant in this case has a previous criminal record, that information should not bias the courts in his first-degree murder case. The man is accused of committing horrific crimes, but he still deserves the full protection of the American legal system. An arrest for a violent crime does not mean that the defendant is automatically guilty. Criminal defense attorneys can help these defendants learn more about their legal rights as the criminal process moves forward.
