Maryland Justice Reinvestment Act

Under the Maryland Justice Reinvestment Act, beginning October 1, 2016, inmates serving minimum mandatory no-parole prison sentences for drug crimes can file a motion for modification of sentence asking the court to reduce their prison sentence and remove the no-parole provision.  The motion must be filed before September 30, 2018.  Only one motion for modification can be filed under the Maryland Justice Reinvestment Act.  The court will schedule a hearing on the motion and consider various factors when deciding whether to reduce the prison sentence.  Since there is only one limited opportunity to take advantage of this extraordinary chance to reduce a mandatory prison sentence for a drug crime it is important to retain an experienced criminal defense attorney to file the motion before September 30, 2018.
