Maryland Pair Accused of Drug Crimes at Daycare

A Maryland nursery school was subject to an emergency suspension after a criminal investigation allegedly uncovered a stash of drugs as well as firearms at the facility. At least two people are facing drug charges in connection with the allegations, which accuse workers at the nursery school of possessing 0.94 grams of marijuana at the scene. Further, drug paraphernalia was allegedly found on the premises, along with a small cache of rifles.

A 30-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man are facing drug charges for their involvement in the incident. The woman is charged with marijuana distribution, along with possession of the drug and associated paraphernalia. The man is facing similar allegations. Authorities say the findings at the daycare center resulted from another investigation in which officers were able to purchase pot from the female defendant while kids were present at the facility. An indictment was filed against that woman in early November, and she is scheduled for an arraignment on Dec. 2.

Officials say that the owners of the Gambrills Day Nursery have been operating the facility for nearly 50 years, and it is a mainstay in the community. The owners must decide whether to challenge the temporary suspension within a month. If they don't, the shut-down could become permanent.

This is not the first time that the facility has run afoul or regulations. The daycare center has been reprimanded for failing to provide authorized caregivers, along with having excessive enrollment and insufficient staffing. State records showed that those problems were resolved in short order, however.

No matter where a criminal defendant is accused of committing drug crimes, he or she deserves a fair trial. The woman accused of selling drugs out of the daycare facility may benefit from a qualified criminal defense attorney who can help her learn more about her rights and responsibilities in the case. Drug defendants should remember that they do have rights, and a drug arrest does not mean an automatic sentence or conviction.
