Would Law Targeting Slower Drivers Lead to Fewer Aggressive Drivers?

Would Law Targeting Slower Drivers Lead to Fewer Aggressive Drivers?

People throughout the state of Maryland use vehicles to get from one place to another. With all of the time spent behind the wheel, it is not uncommon for drivers to face consequences for a driving violation at some point. Aggressive driving is just one of many possible traffic violations someone might be accused of.

While there are many factors that might contribute to someone diving in a manner deemed aggressive, one is frustration with other drivers, such as when a slower driver insists in driving in the left lane which is designated for vehicles seeking to pass. It is possible a bill currently being considered by Maryland legislators could have an impact on how often drivers face charges of aggressive driving.

The bill focuses not on the would-be aggressive drivers, but rather those whose behavior triggers the aggression. More specifically, it provides that slower drivers in the left lane that are holding up traffic could be fined. It is possible they could be fined up to $250 for committing the offense.

While some people are against the bill, which is similar to laws adopted in other states, it has the support of various groups including at least one police officer with a background in traffic enforcement. He indicated that slow drivers in the left lane are a hazard for a variety of reasons, including:

  • That they block emergency responders who have been called to crashes
  • Cause faster drivers to have to pass on the right which places those drivers in a blind spot
  • More aggressive driving on the part of others seeking to get around them

The bill, which would only apply to roads that meet certain criteria-such as consisting of at least three lanes, is currently pending in the Senate after passing in the house. Whether it will become law remains to be seen. In the meantime, it is important for drivers facing aggressive driving charges to understand their options in relation to the accusation. A criminal defense lawyer can help determine the best way to proceed.
